Surrey's Energy Revolution

News

The UK has the leakiest homes in Europe, but Surrey is fighting back with real, funded programmes. The recent Surrey Climate Commission's Energy webinar on 26 February showed how community groups are essential to this work.

Key messages shared during the webinar:

  • Surrey County Council's Home Energy Improvement Programme connects homeowners with expert advice and vetted installers.

  • The Warm Homes Local Grant has £14 million available for low-income households and homes with poor energy ratings (EPC D-G).

  • People listen to familiar faces, and the community-led HEAT (Home Energy Advice Team) recruits and trains local volunteers to give trusted, impartial advice to their neighbours.

  • Retrofit training courses are open to Surrey residents, and new, local, green jobs are being created as a result.

  • Surrey Community Energy is identifying sites for community-funded solar, with the first installation at Birtley House Nursing Home expected to go live later this year.

The message to community groups is clear: please spread the word and get involved! Find out more on the Surrey Climate Forum.
