On 21 April, Surrey County Council Cabinet endorsed the Strategic Recommendations for Climate Action report. The report's recommendations aim to form the basis of Surrey's climate delivery plan for the next five years, and were shaped following public consultation and advice from an expert panel convened by the Commission.
The Surrey Climate Commission attended the Cabinet meeting and pressed for assurances that the report would be strongly recommended to the new unitary authorities. Commission Chairperson Richard Essex argued the report needed to sit front-and-centre across every department, avoiding dilution through siloed working. Commission Director Angela Druckman called for robust, participative public structures to ensure genuinely meaningful community engagement. The requests were acknowledged and accepted.
Richard Essex welcomed the cabinet's decision. "This endorsement by Cabinet is critical," he said, "as it will significantly strengthen the case for adoption by the new unitary authorities."
